Dublin to use portable cameras to crack down on speeders, issue warnings

The pilot program started in February but it will officially begin on Sept. 16.

DUBLIN, Ohio — If you're speeding in Dublin, there's a decent chance you'll get a warning in the mail.

As part of an initiative to get people to slow down, the Dublin Police Department will be using speed warning cameras throughout the city to "support safe streets and reinforce responsible driving."

The cameras will issue warning letters that will be mailed to vehicle owners based on a driver speeding.

The cameras are portable and they can be moved to areas that the city sees as an area of concern. The city says this will help improve overall traffic safety by focusing on changing driver behavior and decreasing traffic crashes, fatalities and severity of crashes related to speed.

The pilot program started in February and but it will officially begin on Sept. 16.

The initial locations for these cameras will be Memorial Drive near Kirkwall Court, Tullymore Drive near Newgrange Drive, Tara Hill Drive near Raymond Drive and Wall Street.

The city says the cameras only collect license plate numbers and vehicle information. Dacra, a third-party vendor, will process the speed data and mail warning letters to drivers.

Dublin Police Deputy Chief Nick Tabernik says it's an opportunity to leverage technology to get drivers to ease up on the gas.

"We're trying to make sure that everyone on the road, driving, biking, walking, running is safe," Tabernik said.

The cameras are the latest prong in the Slow Down Dublin campaign, which includes education and enforcement.

Last fall, the city dropped the speed limit on Riverside Drive through Bridge Park from 40 to 25 miles per hour. The new cameras will focus on two-lane residential neighborhoods.

Joey Harrison lives in Dublin and thinks the warning cameras are a good idea.

"I think it maximizes safety. You know a lot of people like me walking down the road, kids, parents walking their dogs," Harrison said.
