Dublin Police: Have a plan, make a decision in active shooter situation

Central Ohio law enforcement says preparing for the worst could help keep you alive in an active shooter situation.

Central Ohio law enforcement says having a plan of action increases your chances of survival in an active shooter situation.

Dublin Police Officer Chuck Collier helps teach community members how to respond to an active shooter situation.

He says typically, the police department sees an increase in need for the class after a major tragedy.

"We can't ignore it, we can't pretend it's not going to happen because we might be in that situation where it does happen," Officer Collier said.

Making a decision to move, is doing something and those who train to respond to horrific scenes like the one in Las Vegas say it's the very action that could keep you alive.

"If you're huddled in a corner you're a static target. It's a much harder target, much harder shot for a bad guy if you're moving," Officer Collier said.

Officer Collier says what happened in Las Vegas on Sunday, could happen anywhere. That's why Collier helps teach the community to be prepared with active shooter training.

"The biggest thing that we teach and we stress is do something. Make a decision and do it," Officer Collier said.

A Powell family trapped inside of the concert venue on Sunday told 10TV they knew they needed to get out.

"We would run as fast as we could over top of people and then all the sudden the gunfire would break out again and we would dive down and lay down," Adam Hall said.

Experts say being aware, having an exit plan and taking cover gives people the best chances of survival.

"You play like you practice. So that's why it's so important to continue to host these trainings," Officer Collier said.

Officer Collier says more classes like the ones taught to the public in Dublin will help people prepare for the worst.
