Officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called to the area of East Main Street and Lilley Avenue around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday on a report of an armed robbery and carjacking.

Police say the victim was sitting in his car when he was approached by six suspects who displayed handguns and demanded the vehicle and other property.

Officers later spotted the stolen vehicle in the area of East Fifth and Peters avenues. The patrol officers, along with a Columbus police helicopter unit, began to follow the vehicle.

Sgt. James Fuqua said officers made several attempts to stop the stolen vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, but they were unsuccessful. When the vehicle entered the downtown area, Fuqua said the officers following the suspects backed off.

The driver of the stolen vehicle ran a red light at Third and Broad streets and crashed the vehicle, according to Fuqua. The vehicle spun out of control and came to a rest after hitting a parked car approximately 100 feet from the initial crash.

Police said no one sustained any serious injuries in the crash.

Four of the suspects, two 14-year-olds and two 15-year-olds, were detained at the scene. Each of them are charged with aggravated robbery, robbery and receiving stolen property.

Anyone with information as to the identity of the suspect is asked to call the Columbus Police Robbery Unit at 614-645-4665 or to remain anonymous contact Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
