Suspect arrested in robbery leading Tyre King shooting has dangerous past

Police have arrested 19-year-old Demetrius Braxton for robbery, the crime that ultimately led to the deadly shooting of 13-year-old Tyre King.

UPDATE -- A defense attorney has raised concerns about the "prejudicial" effect of releasing the juvenile record of a 19-year-old robbery suspect linked to Tyre King, who was shot fatally by Columbus police last week.

Judge Eileen Paley delayed the hearing Monday after defense attorney Marcus Ross raised the issue of the release of Braxton's record.

Police have arrested 19-year-old Demetrius Braxton for robbery, the crime that ultimately led to the deadly shooting of 13-year-old Tyre King.

Columbus police have spent days trying to figure out what happened in the moments leading up to King's death.

King was shot dead by police and the questions of what happened have lingered ever since.

Police said it traced back to a robbery nearby. Now they say 19-year-old Demetrius Braxton is the suspect arrested. The criminal complaint says Braxton approached the victim and pulled out what looked like a semiautomatic handgun and robbed the man.

Police say Braxton was with a group and they all ran. When police caught up with Tyre King, they say he had a BB gun in his waistband and police shot him when he reached for it, and King was killed.

Braxton is now facing a second degree felony and his troubles with the law date back to 2010.

At age 12, he was charged with attempted rape and gross sexual imposition then charged with assaulting a juvenile detention officer and choking and punching another person.

He was charged five times with setting off a fire alarm to try to get out of a juvenile detention center.

In 2012, a magistrate said Franklin County Children's Services was unable to find an appropriate treatment facility for Braxton's special needs in Ohio. He was sent to a center in Michigan.

Police arrested Braxton around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Lane Avenue and State Route 315.

Columbus police say there were others with King and Braxton the night of the robbery and shooting.
