COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 64-year-old man is accused of shooting and killing a woman in the Driving Park neighborhood of Columbus late Thursday night.
Just before 11:30 p.m., officers were called to the 1700 block of East Sycamore Street, located south of East Livingston Avenue in east Columbus, for a reported shooting.
Arriving officers found 60-year-old Marchelle Freeman shot. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:42 p.m.
Police said the suspect, 64-year-old Stewart Butler, was detained at the scene. He told investigators during an interview that he was defending himself from Freeman, who was his girlfriend, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records.
Butler said that Freeman made him angry with her kicking at him, poking him in the head and how she was talking to him. Court records state that Butler grabbed his gun and fired one shot at her once, not realizing she was struck by the bullet until she fell. He then had a neighbor call 911.
Butler is charged with murder.
Anyone who has information about the shooting is asked to call the Columbus Police Homicide Unit or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS.
