Data on criminals, victims affected by citywide ransomware attack

Earlier this week, cybersecurity expert Connor Goodwolf showed 10TV data of victims from the Columbus City Prosecutor's Office.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — DeShana Reid is still grieving the loss of her son, 23-year-old Nasier. He was shot and killed outside Jack’s Corner Pub in July 2023.

“He was funny, he was very good with impressions. He was a goofy-spirited person. He loved life. He loved his kids, family, friends,” she said.

Two people were charged with his murder. Now, the family is waiting for trial dates.

Deshana said when she heard about the cyberattack in Columbus, she had no idea that her son’s information could be affected.

“I had no idea victims and some cases were actually part of this breach. I’m thinking it was just city officials, workers. It’s disturbing,” she said.

It's unknown if her son's specific information is on the dark web. Earlier this week, cybersecurity expert Connor Goodwolf showed 10TV data of victims from the Columbus City Prosecutor's Office. Deshana wants to know what happened.

“It’s dangerous.  It’s not just financial risk. It's a safety risk also because there are predators on the dark web. I have granddaughters, grandsons,” she said.

But there are more victims, some who were victims of sexual assault. Cameron Foster with the OhioHealth Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio said if you are a victim reach out. Call 844-OHIO-HELP. (844-644-6435)

“There is an advocate trained that can one provide that support whether some are re-traumatized or anyone is feeling uneasy from there we can connect those individuals to aftercare team,” said Foster.

Foster said he wants victims to know that SARNCO is a safe space. You can call them If you think your information has been breached.

“SARNCO takes great care in protecting the identity of survivors that come to seek services. We know that survivors are very protective of their information,” said Foster.

City Attorney Zach Klein declined an interview on Friday but released a statement.

“The criminals who illegally infiltrated the City’s IT infrastructure and possibly stole this information, as well as those who put it up on the dark web for their own gain, have no regard for others, including witnesses or victims of crime. In the City Attorney’s Office, we do everything within our control to protect witnesses and victims in these cases, and we will not abandon that position. My office will continue to cooperate with the ongoing criminal investigation."
