COLUMBUS, Ohio — Crowne Plaza said it planned to lay off approximately 103 employees from the downtown hotel, according to a letter from the company.

The letter was sent Wednesday to the Office of Workforce Development and Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther's office in accordance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988, which requires employers to give official notice to certain government units or officials of a pending mass layoff.

According to Crowne Plaza, the layoff at Crowne Plaza Columbus-Downtown is due to the COVID-19 pandemic and "a result of unforeseeable business circumstances, namely a dramatic reduction in room occupancy and business operations."

Thr layoffs began on March 20 and extended two weeks after that. The company said some of the layoffs are temporary while others will be permanent.

The company said it could not provide additional notice to employees because of "the sudden, dramatic, and unexpected nature of this unforeseen calamity."

"We anticipate that these plans, when finalized, will affect approximately 103 employees at the Hotel... There are bumping rights applicable to the employees being separated. Additionally, no unions represent the affected employees," the letter continues. "This is a difficult, but necessary decision that we are making to help ensure health and safety of our staff, guests, and their families."
