Police: 1 dead after semi crash on I-70 in east Columbus

A portion of the interstate was closed for several hours while the bridge was inspected and the scene was cleared.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A semitrailer driver is dead after crashing into an overpass on Interstate 70 in east Columbus Sunday afternoon, according to the Columbus Division of Police

First responders were called to the scene of the crash on I-70 westbound at Interstate 270 just before 1 p.m.

Police said the semi driver lost control, drove over the wire barriers and crossed the grass median before driving westbound into the eastbound lanes. The semi then crossed over the median again and struck the bridge embankment that supports the Woodcrest Road bridge.

The driver, who has not yet been identified, was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition and later pronounced dead at 1:24 p.m., according to police. Police say no other vehicles were involved.

A portion of the interstate was closed for several hours while the bridge was inspected and the scene was cleared. A spokesperson with the Ohio Department of Transportation told 10TV that the interstate is now back open and there doesn't appear to be any structural damage to the bridge columns or overpass.

The incident remains under investigation.
