COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Franklin County judge issued a $1 million bond for a woman charged with murder in the case of a 22-year-old man who was found dead in the Weinland Park neighborhood Wednesday morning.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers were called to the 1300 block of North Grant Avenue, located east of North 4th Street, on Wednesday. A public safety dispatcher told 10TV that they received a call about a male lying in a lot of blood.
When officers arrived, they found Amareyon Daniels suffering from apparent stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at 7:39 a.m.
Minutes later, police say 23-year-old Shavar Johnson arrived at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he had been driven by 21-year-old Courtney Webb. According to Franklin County Municipal Court records, Johnson told a doctor he had stabbed Daniels.
Johnson was charged with murder and arraigned Thursday in Franklin County Municipal Court, where his bond was set at $1.5 million.
Court records say that Webb told detectives Daniels approached her in an alley and tried to rob her at gunpoint. Webb continued to say that after she told Daniels she had nothing of value to take and Daniels said he was going to rape her. Webb said that as Daniels began to allegedly attack her, Johnson ran up and stabbed Daniels.
However, police say that's not what happened based on video evidence.
Officers obtained video from the scene which reportedly showed Webb sitting in a Chevrolet HHR with Daniels when Johnson ran up to the vehicle, opened the door and attacked Daniels, records say.
According to the complaint, when officers confronted Webb with the new information, she reportedly changed her story and gave officers another version. When officers brought up the inconsistencies of her second story, Webb requested a lawyer.
According to Franklin County Municipal Court documents, Webb’s charges were upgraded to murder after detectives processed her phone and found text messages in which she discussed an incident between her and Daniels prior to 4 a.m., alleging that Daniels stole money and marijuana from her. Records also state that Webb told detectives about this incident in her original interview and said she contacted Daniels prior to the incident to ask for help getting back to Mansfield.
Webb was arraigned in Franklin County Municipal Court Saturday morning, where a judge issued her a $1 million bond. She was ordered to stay away from Johnson and Daniels' family and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for December 23.
