COLUMBUS, Ohio — After receiving a cancer diagnosis last month, Worthington resident Allie Scheetz and her fiancé, Andrew Ensign, knew it was time to get married.
Allie noticed bruising on her body that seemed to be getting worse. She went to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital's emergency department on Oct. 15 to try to figure out what was happening.
Just hours later, she was diagnosed with Acute T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma - a type of cancer. She was then admitted to Riverside Methodist's Blood and Marrow Transplant unit for treatment, including chemotherapy.
Allie has been engaged to Andrew for a year and a half and the couple has been together for seven years. According to a release from OhioHealth, at one point the couple considered eloping but opted not to in order to have family present.
After the cancer diagnosis, they knew it was time.
“Why wait any longer?” said Allie.
The two got married in the chapel at Riverside on Nov. 4. They had already had bands ordered before Allie got sick and they ordered wedding attire off of Amazon.
Around 20 people attended their big day, including Allie's oncologist Dr. Basem William.
The couple was also surprised to find a reception put on by hospital staff.
Dr. Yvonne Efebera, medical director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant program, attended the reception and provided food for the couple and their guests.
Following the reception, Allie chose to shave her head as she moves forward with treatment.
Allie has completed her first round of chemo and is taking time to recover before her second round. Her hope is to be home with her new husband in time for Christmas, according to the release.
