COLUMBUS, Ohio — This weekend, the Contemporary Theatre of Ohio hits the stage with a new production that revisits one of the most celebrated plays of the 20th century, but from a completely new perspective.
"'Wife of a Salesman' imagines what would happen if the wife from Arthur Miller's 'Death of a Salesman' showed up and actually confronted her husband's mistress," explained the show's director, Leda Hoffmann. "In 'Death of a Salesman' they never speak, they never interact, and so playwright Eleanor Burgess has written a brand-new play wondering what would happen if the two ended up in a room together."
The play examines the roles women were expected to play at the time of the story's mid-20th century setting, while also exploring whether or not those expectations have changed over time.
"'Wife of a Salesman' is a part of The Contemporary Theatre of Ohio's 40th anniversary season," said Hoffmann, who also serves as the company's artistic director. "The Contemporary is only the third theater ever to produce this work so we're just so excited to be part of the journey of this brand-new play asking really interesting questions about the now by reflecting on women in our history and thinking about how they relate to women right now."
The Contemporary's "Wife of a Salesman" production runs through Nov. 17. For showtimes and ticket information, visit https://www.thecontemporaryohio.org/.
