POWELL, Ohio — Visitors to the Columbus Zoo Wildlights on Sunday may have seen more headlights and taillights than Christmas lights.
Viewers reported waiting multiple hours in traffic to exit the zoo.
With a warmup in the weather expected this weekend, the zoo is making some changes to improve the flow of traffic.
“Our team has been actively refining our parking and onsite traffic plans with our local and state agencies to accommodate the anticipated high attendance and ensure a safe and efficient guest experience,” a spokesperson for the zoo said.
The zoo is creating additional exit lanes in its “red lot.”
"Last Sunday in the Zoombezi Bay Lot (Blue Lot), guests experienced an efficient traffic flow from parking spaces to exits, with no stopping points and a continuous right turn onto Powell Rd. We’re using this success as a model for additional improvements to our Red Lot, where we faced challenges last weekend,” the spokesperson said.
Zoo staff will also adjust traffic patterns as needed in real time.
The zoo works with local law enforcement, but the parking lot falls under its own jurisdiction.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio State Highway Patrol will have a few deputies and troopers working special duty through the weekend.
