A 22.5-year-old Mandrill named Doug was euthanized at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Tuesday.

According to the zoo, the decision was made to euthanize him after what they described as "rapidly declining health."

Doug's age of over 22-years-old exceeded the average life expectancy of 21 years for mandrills in captivity.

Doug came to Columbus from the Jacksonville Zoo in 2013. While in Columbus, he fathered two babies, Mosi and Brody.

Doug was described by his caretakers as "a patient and protective father" who "absolutely loved his sons."

At the Columbus Zoo, mandrills can be found in the Congo Expedition area.

Mandrills are a type of monkey native to the rainforests of Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo. They are well known for the bright coloring of the males on their faces and bodies.
