Columbus woman sentenced for stealing from elderly in assisted living facilities

Susan Gwynne was sentenced to 65 years in prison Monday for stealing from dozens of senior citizens.

Family photos, wallets, heirlooms and costume jewelry - just some of 3,000 items recovered from Susan Gwynne's home.

Monday Gwynne was sentenced to 65 years for stealing from 46 victims who lived in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

"She found that her jewelry was missing," said Alan Hittepole, whose mother had items stolen. "She didn't notify me for several days until after it was over with. When she called me she was in tears."

Hittepole's mother, like Todd Rolf's, is no longer alive.

"She had passed thank goodness because she would have been really upset," said Rolf. "And that was the hardest part for my sister, because the following Mother's Day after her death, she spent going through stolen items. It was really traumatic for my sister."

Monday both men came to the Delaware County Courthouse to face Gwynne.

"You can't comprehend it," said Rolf. "You can't comprehend. That's why I came today- I wanted to see what evil looked like."

Prosecutors say Gwynne was a nurse's aide and used her knowledge and experience to enter at least 12 different nursing and senior housing facilities and steal from 46 different residents.

"These victims suffered from Alzheimer's, dementia, Parkinson's, cancer," said Delaware County Assistant Prosecutor Amelia Bean-DeFlumer. "They relied on their caregivers. They relied on those who wore the scrubs and the badge like the Defendant wore when she walked into their rooms."

Along with the insult of the theft, is the guilt for family members who at first didn't believe it was happening.

"She kept telling us she thought things we being taken, but we thought she just did not remember correctly, or remember where she had put them," said one victim's daughter in a letter read by Bean-DeFlumer. "I now feel bad we didn't take her concerns more seriously."

Gwynne trembled as she apologized.

"I know with all my heart, this will never happen again. I pray everyone can forgive me," she said.
