Columbus police identify SWAT officers, suspect killed in Home Depot parking lot shooting

Officers were attempting to serve a warrant for a man wanted on a rape charge when they encountered the suspect in the parking lot.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police SWAT officers attempting to serve a warrant in Grove City Saturday night shot and killed a man in a shopping center parking lot.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers were attempting to serve an arrest warrant for 46-year-old Bret Andrews when they encountered him in the parking lot of a Home Depot located at 1680 Stringtown Road.

Police said Andrews was wanted for felony rape out of Athens County. According to court records, the victim was under the age of 13.

Sgt. David Scarpitti said the officers fired their weapons, striking Andrews. Details of what led up to the shooting were not disclosed.

Andrews was taken to Grant Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 8:53 p.m.

On Monday, police identified the officers are James Ashenhurst (23-year veteran of the division), Robert Cutshall (26-year veteran of the division) and Matthew Liford (24-year veteran of the division).

A gun was recovered at the scene, according to police. Scarpitti said body-camera footage from the officers will be released when it's available.

“It is in our best interest to be transparent and we’ll try to provide the public with as much information we can when we can, and we want to make sure we get every investigation right," Scarpitti said.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
