Police: 13-year-old boy injured in shooting outside east Columbus apartment complex

The boy was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital by an adult. Fuqua said he suffered injuries that were non-life-threatening.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 13-year-old boy was injured in a shooting outside an apartment complex on the city's east side Friday afternoon, according to Columbus Police Sgt. James Fuqua.

The shooting happened just after noon outside the Gateway Apartments in the 3000 block of East 7th Avenue, located just off Stelzer Road.

According to documents from Franklin County Municipal Court, two adults and the juvenile were in a car leaving the apartment complex when a man fired one round at the car. The bullet hit the 13-year-old in the back.

The boy was immediately taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital by an adult. Fuqua said he suffered injuries that were non-life-threatening.

“Thankfully the child is going to be stable... but this speaks to a larger problem with our gun violence, and in the daytime, we really need the community in situations like this, if you actually saw something to say something,” Fuqua said.

Court records say that the suspect, 23-year-old Cameron Tyler, has been charged with felonious assault. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call Columbus police or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477 (TIPS).

This incident remains under investigation.
