COLUMBUS, Ohio — A scrapyard fire that burned for days in southeast Columbus has been extinguished.
The Columbus Division of Fire said on social media Monday that the fire at Columbus Auto Shredding at 2181 Alum Creek Dr. was put out Sunday evening. The fire started around 1:30 a.m. last Friday.
The fire sent plumes of black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles across the city. Officials previously said the smoke was not dangerous but it was an irritant.
Fire crews had a difficult time putting out the fire. Battalion Chief Jeffrey Geitter said crews would put out pockets of the fire but it would flare back up.
On Sunday, fire officials said they separated debris and put out small fires and hot spots before finally being extinguished.
Fire crews will still be on the scene Monday to pick up equipment and hoses.
Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire. No injuries were reported.
All roads that were closed due to the fire have been reopened.
