COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the last seven years, Caprena Ross has dedicated her time to getting people to their locations safely as a rideshare driver.
“I do it because I love people, but at what cost,” said Ross.
Ross no longer drives the late-night shift.
“I don't want to be a target and I think a lot of our other colleagues are saying the same thing,” she said. “I can’t go down alleys, I have to make sure my doors are locked.”
Over the weekend, police say 10 people were shot in the Short North around 2:30 a.m. The area is a popular stop for rideshare drivers.
Ross said her riders feel unsafe too.
“They used to walk at night with their dog, with their spouse, with a family member, they can’t do that anymore. They feel like anything that happens after 11 o’clock, they have to cut it off,” said Ross.
Ross feels like she needs to stay on high alert now while driving, calling it "warrior mode."
“When I’m going to get gas, I have to go in good lighting, sometimes I go twenty minutes out,” she said.
