Columbus police officer helps deliver a baby in the back of a car

The mother and newborn are both healthy and doing well after the unexpected birthing experience.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police officers know they can go on a wide array of different calls every day. But Officer Lauren Foster received one on Oct. 21 that she wasn't expecting.

“My daughter-in-law is in labor and I think she is having the baby in the back of my car,” a woman can be heard telling Officer Foster on the officer’s body-worn camera.

Foster had just finished a run when a woman ran up to her cruiser.

“We were just sent home from the hospital,” the woman told Foster.

“Initially I was like, 'medics are coming. They are just down the road. They are not very far'. She was just sent home. We have plenty of time,” Foster said.

As any parent knows, babies come when they are ready, not the parents.

“I put on my gloves just in case. Then I saw the baby's head and I was like 'Oh, this is me. I'm the one doing this, let's go',” Foster explained.

Moments later, the mother, along with Foster's help, delivered the baby in the back of the car.

“She was certainly having a hard time at that moment and being able to help her was great. It is definitely a story that will last my career,” Foster said.

The mother and newborn baby were taken to the hospital and Foster was able to check on them and said both were healthy and doing well.
