Columbus police investigating reported assault near Ohio State campus

The two students were taken to a nearby hospital with lacerations to the head.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police is investigating after two people were reportedly assaulted near the Ohio State University's campus on Thursday night.

Two male students and a female non-student were walking in the campus area just before midnight along North High Street across from the Ohio Union. According to a report from Ohio State, they were approached by four male suspects.

The university stated one of the male suspects approached the female and made remarks that initiated a verbal altercation between the two groups. The male suspects then reportedly physically assaulted the two male students.

The suspects also took the cell phones and keys from the male students, the report stated.

The victims ran to a nearby bar for help as the four suspects left the area in a silver sedan.

The two students were taken to a nearby hospital with lacerations to the head.

A couple of students on campus said they were concerned.

"That's definitely something that is nerve-wracking, especially being a female walking through campus, having to walk a few blocks to get to your house, that's definitely nerve-wracking," said senior Ohio State student Leah Zenk.

"When I heard that it was two guys that got attacked, they were practicing the buddy system, you know it's just a little less like -- they took the precautions and still it happened to them so it's not fun to hear,” said Trey Worthen, a sophomore at Ohio State.

Columbus police are the lead law enforcement agency investigating this incident with assistance from Ohio State police.
