Columbus police identify gunshot victim who died after crashing into pole in Franklinton

The crash happened in the 700 block of Sullivant Avenue Tuesday night.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man who police say was shot died at the hospital after crashing his vehicle into a pole in the Franklinton neighborhood Tuesday night, according to the Columbus Division of Police.

Sgt. Joe Albert said officers were called to the 700 block of Sullivant Avenue around 10:40 p.m. for a crash. Caleb McKenzie, 21, was found injured and unresponsive inside the vehicle. 

McKenzie was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Doctors at the hospital discovered the driver was shot.

It's unclear when or where McKenzie was shot, but Albert said the gunshot wound caused him to crash.

McKenzie was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:03 p.m.
