COLUMBUS, Ohio — An arrest warrant is out for a man Columbus police say hit another man in the head with a metal baseball bat.
The incident happened on Nov. 4 at the Food Mart Express on Sullivant Avenue just before 2 p.m., according to Franklin County Municipal Court records.
Records say Usman Bashir, an employee of the store, walked out and swung a metal baseball bat at a 23-year-old man’s head, hitting him.
10TV spoke with Shelly, the mother of the victim, who asked for her son to stay anonymous because of safety reasons.
“My son already had a hard, sad life, but this by far has to be the worst cause this one he almost died,” she said.
She said her son has struggled with mental health and health issues throughout his life.
Court records say her son was left unconscious for almost two minutes after he was hit. Documents say Bashir admitted to hitting the man and said that it was in self-defense.
"This man tried to take his head off with a metal baseball bat,” said Shelly.
She said her son suffered a traumatic brain injury and will have complications that linger from it.
There is a warrant out for Bashir’s arrest for a charge of felonious assault. An employee at the store told 10TV that Bashir no longer works at the store and had no further comment.
“This should never have happened, and it shouldn't happen again,” said Shelly.
The family has organized a GoFundMe for help during this time.
