Columbus firefighter agrees to plead guilty to 2 felony charges

Fairfield County Common Pleas Court documents say that Shaffer “unlawfully did engage in sexual conduct” with the victim on or about July 21.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Columbus firefighter accused of rape has agreed to plead guilty to two different charges, according to the Fairfield County prosecuting attorney.

Christopher Shaffer, 38, was originally charged with rape but agreed to plead guilty to one count of sexual battery and one count of gross sexual imposition – both are third-degree felonies.

Fairfield County Common Pleas Court documents say that Shaffer “unlawfully did engage in sexual conduct” with the victim on or about July 21. Documents also say that Shaffer "knew or had reasonable cause to believe that [the victim’s] ability to resist or consent was substantially impaired because of a mental or physical condition or because of advanced age."

A spokesperson for the Columbus Division of Fire told 10TV in July that they were aware of the criminal charges and that Shaffer had been placed on administrative duty. While on administrative duty, he will not have contact with the public.

“Per division protocol, upon the conclusion of the criminal case, the Division of Fire will initiate an administrative investigation,” their statement said.

Prosecuting Attorney Kyle Witt said through a conversation with Shaffer's attorney, a plea agreement was reached, and the prosecution and the defense will be presenting the court with a joint sentencing recommendation.

The plea and sentencing will likely occur in the next 30 to 60 days.

10TV has reached out to Steven Stein, the president of the Columbus Fire Fighters Union IAFF Local 67, and Attorney Mark Collins for comment.
