Columbus Academy alumni share passion for remembering the legacy of World War II pilot George Winger

George Winger's plane was shot down during a bombing mission. He was 25 years old when he died in August 1943.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The remains of a Columbus pilot killed during World War II were identified earlier this year — nearly 80 years later.

George Winger's plane was shot down during a bombing mission. He was 25 years old when he died in August 1943.

He was a graduate of Columbus Academy. Two other Columbus Academy graduates spent time making sure his story was not forgotten through several projects including a documentary.

10TV’s Lindsey Mills caught up with them in October for their reaction to the discovery of his remains being identified.

"I just had goosebumps, I didn't realize they were exploring that archaeological project,” said Carolyn Vaziri. “I think it's a great project that they're doing. They're bringing solace to so many families. "

"Because of his sacrifice, who knows how many families are around today,” said Elizabeth Vaziri.

According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, Winger was to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
