The charges against a semi-truck driver involved in a police chase halfway around the city of Columbus on I-270 have been dropped.
A spokesperson with the city of Hilliard confirmed evidence was submitted that 63-year-old Barry Demings was suffering from a medical condition during the incident back in March.
“The evidence showed that the defendant was suffering from a medical condition that caused his erratic driving. Because of that medical condition, we could not prove that he had the requisite mental intent to support a conviction,” Tracy Bradford, Law Director for the City of Hilliard, said.
Hilliard police began receiving calls of a semi driving erratically near Tuttle Crossing around 7:30 p.m. on March 15.
Police followed the semi around I-270 to the south then to the east side of the city.
Police used stop sticks to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued on, driving on the rims of the semi. The chase ended after 26 miles around I-270.
The fully loaded truck was carrying syrup used in soda.
Demings was originally charged with OVI, failure to comply with an order of a police officer and marked lane violations.
