Central Ohio dog trained in FEMA search and rescue

After a year and a half, Guinness had to pass two rigorous tests to be certified, and the training continues after the tests.

A dog in Hilliard is ready for work. He and his firefighter owner are ready for hurricane season.

They're part of a FEMA urban search and rescue team.

Worthington firefighter Chris Courtney was given his black lab, Guinness, four years ago.

Courtney had joined Ohio Task Force One, a FEMA urban search and rescue team.

“If there's any disaster anywhere in the United States, we'll get called out,” Courtney said.

Guinness searches for people, still alive, trapped in rubble due to a disaster.

The training has been intense. They go to a training facility in Dayton for three days, every three weeks.

After a year and a half, Guinness had to pass two rigorous tests to be certified, and the training continues after the tests.

Chris and Guinness were called out last October for Hurricane Matthew. Hurricane season just started June 1, they are ready to go again should they get the call.
