Cedarville University first Ohio school to allow concealed carry on campus

The school's Board of Trustees voted last Friday to allow guns on campus.

Cedarville University plans to give full-time faculty permission to carry a concealed handgun on campus.

The small Christian college with less than 4,000 students is the first in Ohio to make the policy.

Leaders said Cedarville might be the ideal campus for a concealed carry policy because of who attends the school.

"Cedarville university's constituency tends to be very conservative, they tend to be conservative theologically, they are going to be conservative politically so when we surveyed our students and faculty overwhelmingly supported this type of policy on our campus," said Janice Supplee Vice President of Marketing and Communication.

The new policy allows faculty, staff and trustees to carry, but not students.

Supplee said 92 percent of faculty and students surveyed supported the idea.

The university has yet to finalize how it's CCW policy will work, but said its possible faculty could carry in a classroom or at a sporting event.

"If that coach is a full-time faculty or staff member then yes," Supplee said.

The university hopes to finalize its policy this summer.
