Suspect believed to be armed taken into custody on Capital University campus

University Police Chief Scott Kunkle said when the suspect was detained, police discovered the object believed to be a weapon was a cellphone.

BEXLEY, Ohio — Capital University issued a safety alert Saturday afternoon warning students to stay inside and lock their doors after a man believed to be armed was seen entering a building on campus. The suspect has since been taken into custody, the university shared in an update.

According to the university’s website, the man was seen entering Schaaf Hall, a student housing center in Bexley, at 4:25 p.m.

He was wearing a maroon shirt and maroon ball cap with gray shorts and white tennis shoes.

Capital’s public safety responders and Bexley police responded and the man was taken into custody on the building's third floor.

University Police Chief Scott Kunkle said when the suspect was detained, police discovered the object believed to be a weapon was a cellphone.

Students were asked to stay inside and lock their doors when the alert was issued. They were given the all-clear at 5:18 p.m.

Police are looking at possible charges of inducing panic, Kunkle said.
