DELAWARE, Ohio -- A bicyclist is dead after being struck by a car early Tuesday morning in Delaware County.
The fatal crash happened at approximately 6:23 a.m. on US 36/ SR 37 near North Old State Road in Berlin Township, according to the Delaware Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
OSHP says 39-year-old Michael A. Tighe, of Westerville, was riding his bicycle westbound on the right berm of US 36 / SR 37 when a driver in a 2011 Honda Accord, also heading westbound, went across the white-edge line and crossed onto the right berm, striking Tighe and his bicycle.
Tighe was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash, according to OSHP.

“It is with the deepest sadness that Pelotonia faces the loss of Michael Tighe, a first-year member of our community, a cancer survivor, oncology nurse, husband, father, and friend to many. This man, so dear to his family and loved ones, lost his life in a tragic accident today while he was on a training ride to raise funds for innovative cancer research at Ohio State. All of us at Pelotonia extend our deepest condolences to Michael’s family, whose grief must be immeasurable at this time. We, and the entire Pelotonia community, will carry Michael in our hearts as we continue our mission-driven work that was so personal to Michael.”
US 36 / SR 37 westbound lanes were closed for more than two hours while authorities investigated the crash. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be a factor, according to OSHP.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Delaware County Fire and EMS, Berlin Township Fire and EMS, BST&G Fire and EMS and Survival Flight.
