CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio — The Canal Winchester Local Schools' Board of Education has approved a plan to reopen schools for the 2020-21 academic year.

The board approved the plans Monday during a virtual meeting.

The district says students will have two academic options: a school-based track or the Canal Winchester Online Learning Academy.

The school-based track will allow students to have maximum in-person instruction, with consideration given to health risk levels. Under the school-based option, the district would also consider guidance and follow requirements from local and state health officials.

Parents of students who choose the school-based track will be asked to check students daily for possible coronavirus symptoms before they go to school. If students begin experiencing COVID-19 symptoms while at school, they will be placed into quarantine with a mask, a parent will be asked to pick up the student and Franklin County Public Health will be contacted.

The online learning academy option is for students wanting an alternative to in-person classroom instruction. Students who choose to participate in the online learning academy will have to make a semester-long commitment.

Those students will also still have access to school counselors and extra curricular activities. The online learning academy is available to students in grades K-12.

The first day of school for students in grades 3, 6, and 9 is September 2.

The first day of school for students in grades 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 is September 3. Students enrolled in the online learning academy will also start school on September 3.
