CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio — A student at Canal Winchester High School was found with a gun in their possession on school grounds Thursday afternoon, the district confirmed.
According to a statement from the district, school officials were alerted that a student smelled like marijuana. The student was then brought into the office around 1 p.m. for a discussion with administrators.
During the discussion, the student told the faculty members that they had a gun in their bag.
The school resource officer immediately confiscated and secured the gun from the student's possession. Additional law enforcement was called to the school to assist and the student was removed from the premises.
Since the gun was secured by the resource officer immediately, the school did not enter a lockdown and students continued with the rest of the school day.
The district said they are working with law enforcement and following their advice to ensure the community's safety.
It's unclear at this time if the student will face charges.
