BrewDog officially opens brewery in Canal Winchester

For residents in and around Canal Winchester it has been a long awaited opening.

The wait to get a seat inside central Ohio's newest brewery was three hours at times Monday afternoon, but once customers made their way to a booth or stool their taste buds were treated to Punk IPA, 5am Saint or any other choice of BrewDog craft beers.

For residents in and around Canal Winchester it has been a long awaited opening.

"I couldn't get down here quickly enough. I was ready to drink one of my favorite beers at a brewery in my own backyard," Ryan Flynn said.

Some said they made the trip from Thornville, Grove City, Delaware and even one couple crossed state lines and drove in from Pittsburgh.

Lancaster teacher Cheryl Gerst said she believes this is just the start of what she believes will become a tourist destination.

As Gerst sipped on a BrewDog specialty called "CoCoa Psycho" she explained she's been anxious for the launch for a long time.

"I watched the bidding process online. Watched all the different places around here trying to get them to come," Gerst said. "After they announced they were coming I was just eagerly driving by all the time."

One table over, Homebrew supplier Jim Downing and his German Shepherd made the drive from Westerville.

Downing said he and his pet were given a welcoming invitation to join in the grand opening and they were quick to accept.

"This is big," Downing said. "I think it's awesome. They're opening up an amazing and massive brewery at 170 barrels when the average brewery is somewhere around 10."

Downing said he believes the chemistry of the water in central Ohio, specifically in Canal Winchester, was part of the draw for the European Brewer to touch down it's very first U.S. location along Gender Road.

"In making beer, your water chemistry is super important. The cleaner the water you can have and the right mineral content- too much sulfur, not enough this, not enough that- it all matters in making the best beer," Downing said.

While Jim points to the water, Grove City resident Mike Pracher insists the local beer passion is what lured the company south of Columbus.

"If you look at all the micro-breweries Columbus is getting, it fits right in. Here in Ohio we have become one of the micro-brewery/micro-distillery capitals," Pracher said.

Brewdog Special Projects Manager Keith Bennet said they are aware of the zeal for good brew in Ohio and even plan to become a part of the Columbus Ale Trail. However he said the truth is for BrewDog it came down to the people.

"The people here are fantastic. We looked at other place but this is the spot we came back to. Everyone was unbelievably welcoming. Just blew our socks off," said Bennet.

Bennet acknowledged the economic impact BrewDog is anticipated to create.

"We're hoping that we will be creating over 125 jobs within the first three years, but we're already about 60 employees already," Bennet said.

That gives Gerst an idea of what she'll do when she steps away from her physics and chemistry classroom and into retirement this May.

"I'm going to have to look into working here. I would love to be part of the process," she said.
