New affordable housing complex for seniors breaks ground in south Columbus

The building is expected to be completed in 15 months.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A groundbreaking ceremony took place Wednesday in south Columbus for a multiphase senior assisted living campus.

Developer and contractor Woda Cooper Companies is working in collaboration with other city, state and federal agencies to complete the project.

The company specializes in the development, design and construction of affordable homes.

This story is part of 10TV's "Boomtown" initiative — our commitment to covering every angle of central Ohio's rapid growth. This includes highlighting success stories, shining a light on growing pains and seeking solutions to issues in your everyday life.

Ohio’s new workforce housing tax credit program is implemented in the project, which is helping to expand affordable housing in the state.

In addition, The City of Columbus approved a 100% 15-year tax abatement for both phases.

The targeted age group is 55 years and up.

“We’re gonna target incomes anywhere between 30-80% of area median gross income,” said Jeffrey Woda, founder of Woda Cooper Companies.

Within walking distance of the facility is the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging, which seeks to provide resources and support to those navigating aging.

Director Katie White said it’s been a dream of hers to have affordable senior housing on the property.

“The number one challenge that we are hearing about right now is housing and the lack of affordable housing,” said White. "They’re working on or living on a fixed income, and as the cost of rent, utilities and living goes up, there really isn’t a way for individuals to be earning more to keep up with that pace.”

The building is expected to be completed in 15 months.
