MARYSVILLE, Ohio — An inmate at a prison in Marysville was hospitalized after she was struck by a UTV last month.
The incident happened on March 14 at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. A spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections said that a staff member was driving a UTV responding to an incident within the facility when they hit an inmate.
Body-camera footage from the staff member shows them driving through the lawn of the facility before getting to the sidewalk where several inmates were walking around. Once on the sidewalk in the UTV, the vehicle struck a chair and the driver steered to the right, hitting an inmate.
After turning off the vehicle, the driver is seen getting out and is heard telling the inmate "sorry, sorry" before repeatedly telling her to sit down.
The inmate was immediately taken to the infirmary. According to ODRC, she was later taken to a hospital and returned to the facility the next morning.
The UTV involved was taken out of service for a full inspection.
An internal investigation is underway.
“Following the incident, the warden issued a safety reminder to all staff regarding the use of UTVs in the performance of their duties,” the spokesperson said.
