Bodycam, security footage shows fired Ross County officer beat inmate

Sheriff George Lavender released a statement on Monday saying an incident happened on Feb. 9 and that he terminated an officer, Major William White.

ROSS COUNTY, Ohio — The Ross County Sheriff's Office released body camera and security footage on Wednesday of a now-fired law enforcement officer beating an inmate last week.

Sheriff George Lavender released a statement on Monday saying an incident happened on Feb. 9 and that he terminated an officer, Major William White, the following day.

Surveillance video dated Feb. 9 shows White and an inmate traveling through a stairwell.

As the inmate was turning the corner, he appears to say something to White, who then grabbed him, smashed him against the wall and threw him to the ground. The security camera did not have audio.

Another officer who was wearing a body camera rushes to the stairwell after hearing the commotion from White taking the inmate to the ground.

The inmate can be heard saying he's "done" and apologizing dozens of times as officers handcuffed him.

It's unclear what exactly prompted White to beat the inmate, but White can be heard saying "Did I disrespect you? Did I talk [expletive] to you? Did I talk to you sideways? Don't you ever turn back toward me on a staircase ever in your life again. You understand me?"

The inmate was taken to a hospital for his injuries, but is now back in jail.

The sheriff's office said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the case and will not comment further.
