Bexley Board of Education accepts teacher's resignation after racist incident at middle school

The vote comes nearly two weeks after a racist incident at Bexley Middle School.

BEXLEY, Ohio — The Bexley Board of Education voted Tuesday night to accept the resignation of a teacher following a racist incident two weeks ago at the middle school.

Superintendent Jason Fine emailed parents Friday night saying the teacher put in his resignation. The resignation had to be voted on by the board before it became official.

On Feb. 3, the school district said an image appeared on a green screen behind two students reading morning announcements. After the students read a fact about Black History Month, a photo of an orangutan eating a watermelon appeared.

The video announcements are recorded on the Friday before they are shown. It's not clear if anyone watched the video before it aired.

The incident sparked outrage from parents, one of whom threatened to sue the district if the teacher was not fired. Students also walked out Friday afternoon in protest.
