RUSSELLS POINT, Ohio — Plans are now in the works to replace the Our Lady of Fatima statue in Russell’s Point two months after it was destroyed during a tornado.
The statue served a symbol of guidance for people at the lake for almost 60 years.
Right now, it's an empty space waiting for a new statue.
“I was really sad. It’s one of our landmarks that everyone knew about,” said Paige Kindle-Wine, who grew up at Indian Lake.
For many at the lake, the statue helped take them home.
“When I was little and anytime we were lost on the water, that’s what we would look for to go home, because I lived right down the street,” said Kindle-Wine.
For some, it also served as a sign to their favorite restaurant on the lake.
“When we go out on the boat and we see the statue, we call it the lighthouse of the lake. If you follow the statue and go under the bridge then you’re at Lulu’s,” said Cheryl Faulder, who visits Indian Lake.
Bill Quatman’s grandfather put the statue up in the 1960s. Now, he wants to honor his grandfather and put the statue back up with the help of the community.
“It’s a great legacy for people to say 'I helped design that or I designed that.' The original statue was there for 60 years and we hope this is up at least another 60 years,” said Quatman.
The American society of Ephesus will start taking ideas for a new design on June 13. Those who want to submit a design can do so here.
There will be categories for those 10 and under through 18 and up.
The nonprofit wants the statue to have the same meaning as a landmark and place to reflect, but a new design to embrace the community. For residents like Kindle-Wine, she’s happy to hear a new statue will be built soon.
“I like the idea of something new, but I like the classic and I wish it was the same. I know we can’t keep her so,” said Kindle-Wine.
The nonprofit will choose a winner by mid-September. They hope to have a new state up by August 2026.
