BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio -- An officer from the Bellefontaine Police Department has died.

The department says Officer Craig Comstock, 42, passed away suddenly in his sleep on Friday.

Comstock was hired by Bellefontaine Police in May of 2002 and served in several positions.

He started as a patrol officer and then in 2011, he became a narcotics detective and helped fight the opioid epidemic.

He also worked as a member of the department's Special Response Team.

In a release the department said, "We are deeply saddened by our loss. Craig was well liked and enjoyed being a father, brother, son, grandson, officer, detective, coach, and much, much more."

"We would like to thank the men and women of the Logan County Sheriffs Office, Bellefontaine Fire Department, other city departments, and the Ohio Highway Patrol for their kindness and generous support through this very difficult time. "

He is survived by his wife of nearly 20 years, a son, and a daughter.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed by the Montgomery County Medical Examiner's Office.
