COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio lieutenant who was fatally shot during a training exercise last month was struck just above his bulletproof vest, according to an autopsy report.

According to Rodney Osborne's autopsy report from the Franklin County Coroner's Office, the bullet struck him in the chest. The bullet was found in the back portion of the vest.

The shooting happened on April 9 at the Corrections Training Academy in Pickaway County at the facility's tactical firing range.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections said the shooting appeared to be a "tragic accident." The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating Osborne's death as a reckless homicide. No charges have been filed at this time.

OSHP released a preliminary report into Osborne's death last month. The name of the person who is the subject of the investigation was redacted and they have not been charged. ODRC previously said one of its employees, a special operations commander, was placed on administrative leave on April 10 as the investigation continues.

Osborne was with ODRC for 13 years and worked at the Southern Ohio Corrections Facility in Scioto County. He was named Employee of the Year at the facility, where he was the commander of the Special Response Team at the facility.

He was laid to rest on April 15. Osborne leaves behind a wife, three children, a grandchild and many extended family.
