COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal crash involving a truck and multiple vehicles that happened on Interstate 270 Tuesday morning.

Deputies were called at 7 a.m. Tuesday to close the eastbound lanes of I-270 between US-33 and Interstate 71 due to a serious injury crash.

According to the sheriff’s office, an International truck was traveling eastbound on I-270 when the driver appears to have approached stopped traffic and swerved into the middle lane and struck a Freightliner box truck.

The International truck then struck a Toyota Highlander, which was shoved off the road and into the ditch.

The sheriff’s office said the Freightliner box truck continued east in the left lane losing control and then crossed back across to the right lane where it struck a Toyota Corolla.

The Corolla left the roadway and came to a stop in a ditch. The box truck then struck a Mack truck and trailer.

The driver of the Corolla, identified as 56-year-old Steven Michelsen, was pronounced dead by medics.

The driver of the Freightliner box truck was taken to Mt. Carmel East in stable condition. The driver of the Highlander was taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition.

The roadway was closed for several hours and reopened just before noon.

The sheriff’s office said there is no indication that alcohol or drugs were a factor in this crash. This incident remains under investigation.
