NEWARK, Ohio -- Authorities have identified a Newark man who was found dead after a house fire on Channel Street.

The Licking County Coroner identified the man as 50-year-old Douglas B. Baumgartner.

His body was found inside a home that caught fire around 3 a.m. August 30.

Newark Fire arrived to find a house fully engulfed in flames at 176 East Channel Street. The intense flames forced crews to immediately go into defensive mode to battle the fire, according to Newark Fire Chief Patrick Connor.

Authorities say the home was on a dead end street, surrounded by other vacant houses and there were no utilities to the structure.

Chief Connor said at first they believed no one was home at the time of the fire -- but they discovered Baumgartner and a large amount of debris inside the house.

The Licking County Coroner performed an autopsy but have not released how Baumgartner died.

Investigators say the fire remains under investigation.
