AEP crews replace damaged, wooden power poles with steel in Grove City

Utility officials say about 450 customers don't have electricity and more than 20 power poles that came down in the storm still need replaced.

Hundreds of Grove City neighbors remain in the dark two days after a tornado damaged their homes.

AEP Ohio crews are working overnight to get the power back on.

Utility officials say about 450 customers don't have electricity and more than 20 power poles that came down in the storm still need replaced.

It can hold strong during a powerful push of wind.

That's one reason why AEP is putting up steel power poles in Grove City.

"It's a new technology, we can bury them directly in the ground without putting concrete in the base," AEP Ohio Emergency Preparedness Manager Dave Callahan said.

Crews have to replace 25 wooden transmission poles along Orders and Hoover Roads.

At least 8 distribution poles are already in the ground.

"We want to get the power back on, get these people back to a life of normalcy," Callahan said.

AEP officials said more than 30 poles in all twisted right off and toppled onto cars during Tuesday's tornado.

"There's still poles being cleaned up on Orders Road, so we're finishing that up, and as we're doing that we're bringing in the steel poles in the place of wood poles that were here," Callahan said.

AEP says the steel poles can withstand around 100 mph winds.

In 2012, straight-line winds took down power poles on Hamilton Road.

AEP replaced them with steel, saying they are more durable in those conditions.

"It's a little better in the wind condition. We'd still have damage but the recovery time should be faster," Callahan said.

Two days after the storm and AEP is still at it.

"System right now is fairly fragile so we're being cautious on what we do," Callahan said.

Crews will clock in overnight to drill through steel and try and get the lights back on.

AEP says they hope to restore power for more people Friday, but the rest will have to wait until Sunday evening.

Utility officials also say they hope to have all of Hoover Road opened on Monday.
