What happened on Dec. 22, 2020?

Coy had gone to the neighborhood to investigate a resident's complaint about noise from a running car when he encountered Hill.

Police body camera footage showed Hill emerging from the garage of a friend's house holding up a cellphone in his left hand, his right hand not visible, seconds before he was fatally shot by Coy. About 10 minutes passed before officers at the scene began coming to the aid of Hill, who lay bleeding on the garage floor. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Opening statements delivered, witness testimony starts

Attorneys gave their opening statements on Thursday following days of jury selection.

The jury learned new details from Franklin County Assistant Prosecutor Renee Amlin and defense attorney Kaitlyn Stephens that Coy and Hill spoke as Hill sat inside a running SUV. The interaction happened moments before Hill was shot in the driveway.

In their opening statements, the prosecuting and defense attorneys argued that it was up to the jurors to decide whether Coy was justified in shooting Hill.

Columbus police officer Amy Detweiler, who responded with Coy during the disturbance call, and the neighbor who called 911 testified on Thursday.
