COLUMBUS, Ohio — Opening statements are set to begin in the murder trial of a former Columbus police officer who fatally shot a man in his garage nearly four years ago.
Adam Coy, a 17-year-old veteran of the Columbus Division of Police, shot and killed Andre’ Hill on Dec. 22, 2020, while responding to a neighbor’s noise complaint.
Coy pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, reckless homicide and felonious assault.
10TV will stream the trial gavel-to-gavel on 10TV+. You can download our streaming app on Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV.
The jury, composed of 12 jurors and four alternates, was seated Wednesday after the selection process lasted three days. The jury pool was 120, but most were dismissed through the process. Some reasons include scheduling conflicts or because of their opinions on the case or legal process.
What happened on Dec. 22, 2020?
Coy had gone to the neighborhood to investigate a resident's complaint about noise from a running car when he encountered Hill.
Police body camera footage showed Hill emerging from the garage of a friend's house holding up a cellphone in his left hand, his right hand not visible, seconds before he was fatally shot by Coy. About 10 minutes passed before officers at the scene began coming to the aid of Hill, who lay bleeding on the garage floor. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Coy's attorney, Mark Collins, has said the officer thought he saw Hill with a silver revolver in his right hand.
