Nine Franklin County Sheriff's deputies have been disciplined after an internal affairs investigation into an incident where a recruit was injured at the county's training academy.
It happened in March during a training scenario exercise. There are no details into the extent of the student's injury.
As part of the internal affairs investigation, nine deputies have been either suspended or reprimanded:
- Lt. Keith Cooper - 30-day suspension
- Cpl. Lucas Holt - 20-day suspension
- Deputy James Dishong - 15-day suspension
- Sgt. David Barrick - 3-day suspension
- Deputy Charles Hamilton - written reprimand
- Deputy Maynard Keaton - written reprimand
- Deputy Mike Jackson - written reprimand
- Lt. Nathaniel Sheppard - removed from Training Academy assignment
Sheriff Zach Scott issued a statement to 10TV following the results of the internal investigation.
"As sheriff, I expect the highest caliber of professional conduct from all of my staff," Scott writes. "While the deputies involved in the training incident may have acted with good intentions, their actions fell outside of the conduct required by the sheriff's office policies and procedures and my own expectations. I take seriously rules infractions committed by my staff, and as a consequence render discipline in a fair, but responsive manner. I have made my decision regarding appropriate disciplinary sanctions and consider the manner closed."
