MARION, Ohio — A 79-year-old man died after sustaining serious injuries from a crash in Marion County on Tuesday, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Around 2:10 p.m., a Harley Davison Tri Glide Ultra motorcycle driven by James Wetzel, of Marion, and a 2015 Freightliner Cascadia semi-tractor trailer were heading north in the right lane of U.S. Route 23. Meanwhile, a 2019 Ford Taurus was heading north in the left lane.

According to OSHP, Wetzel slowed down to turn onto Linn Hipsher Road. The Freightliner swerved to the right, traveled onto the paved beam and struck Wetzel’s motorcycle.

The Freightliner traveled off the northeast side of the intersection, struck a stop sign and came to a rest in a ditch. The Ford struck debris from the crash.

OSHP said Wetzel sustained serious injuries from the crash and was taken to Marion General Hospital. He was flown to Grant Medical Center where he died from his injuries on Wednesday.

The other drivers were not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
