5 arrests, 5 officers injured on second night of protests in downtown Columbus

For the second night in a row protesters clashed with Columbus police officers in the downtown area.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- For the second night in a row protesters clashed with Columbus police officers in the downtown area.

Friday night’s protest began at Columbus police headquarters around 8 p.m.

People gathered to protest the death of George Floyd in Minnesota.

Officers in riot gear and the bicycle unit maintained a perimeter at the entrance, forcing protesters back to the sidewalk.

Hundreds of protesters then took to the street along Front Street, dodging traffic as they walked in the middle of the road.

The mounted unit with Columbus police attempted to control the crowd while maintaining safety for motorists.

The crowd eventually landed at North High and Broad Street, which is where Thursday night’s protest started.

Pepper spray was administered by police to control the crowd, which some people were still occupying the middle of the roadways.

Near City Hall, protesters were met with more pepper spray and flash-bang grenades.

Protesters were throwing water bottles and shooting fireworks at the officers.

There were also reports of looting in the Short North area.

Police responded to the scene, used pepper spray and established a perimeter to contain the protesters, who were throwing objects and rocks at the officers.

Police said five people were arrested on Friday and five officers were injured by thrown objects.
