4 hospitalized after south Columbus house fire

Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Jeffery Geitter "several pets" died as a result of the fire.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Four people were hospitalized following a house fire in south Columbus Monday night.

Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Jeffery Geitter said crews were called to the home on East Gates Street, east of the Merion Village neighborhood, around 8:30 p.m.

One person was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Three other people were taken to Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and their condition was described as stable.

Geitter added that "several pets" died as a result of the fire.

The cause is under investigation, but Geitter said it looks like the fire may have started on the lower floor and worked its way upstairs. There is significant damage to the back of the home, but it is not believed to be a total loss.
