COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nearly 40 dogs believed to be involved in dogfighting were seized after multiple search warrants were served in Franklin County on Wednesday.
According to a release from Columbus Humane, 39 dogs were taken into the care by the organization. The dogs have wounds indicative of being used in organized dogfighting, as well as other untreated medical conditions in various degrees of severity. More than 100 pieces of dogfighting paraphernalia were also seized from the properties.
"They're in various conditions of health. They're currently getting the care that they need here. They're being seen by our veterinarians and getting the care that they were not previously getting,” said Chief Humane Agent Jessica Scott.
In addition, 40 leopard geckos were found, but 16 of them were dead on arrival. The geckos are showing signs of severe neglect and untreated medical conditions, Columbus Humane says.
Felony and misdemeanor charges are pending against at least four individuals. A court hearing is scheduled for May 22.
Columbus Humane says all the dogs will remain in its custody to receive care, treatment and assessments.
"Dogfighting is very, very prevalent. It is all over the county, not just in areas you would think it would be in, it's all over. So again, I'm a big believer in - if you see something, say something, even if you are not sure,” Scott said.
The organization says anyone who may be interested in adopting any of the animals can check its website, but they are still in the very early stages of the investigation and taking care of the animals.
