The Ohio State Highway Patrol says three people were killed in a single vehicle crash in Fairfield County on Monday morning.
It happened on State Route 158 near State Route 204 in Liberty Township.
Authorities said 51-year-old Kathryn Sparks was traveling northbound on SR 158 when she drove off the right side of the road, over an embankment and struck a tree.
Sparks was taken to Grant Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries.
The two other occupants, 29-year-old Krista Keeton and 63-year-old Georgann Keeton were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Highway Patrol said none of them were wearing seat belts.
Troopers say it doesn't appear that the car was going at a high-rate of speed, and there was no sign of an attempt to brake.
S.R. 158 near S.R. 204 was closed as authorities cleared the scene. It has since reopened.
As families grieve the loss of loved ones, the question has come up: How safe is this stretch of road?
ODOT pulled some numbers. In the last five years on the mile-long stretch of State Route 158 between intersections at Stemen Road and State Route 204 there have been 10 crashes. Of that number, five involved injuries and five involved "vehicle-only" damage. ODOT says of the 10 crashes, there were no fatalities.
ODOT says it will now wait for the investigation to be complete to see what, if any, new safety measures might be able to be installed.
